エロディー・ヒーリックスック / Elodie Hiryczuk (1977年 フランス生まれ、オランダ在住)
ヒーリックスックは、2001年よりアーティストのSjoerd van Oevelenとともに、Hiryczuk / Van Oevelen名義で制作を行っている。彼らは、主に写真やインスタレーションなどの表現を通し、私たちが世界を認識する上で写真がどのような機能を果たすかについて探求している。特に、建築や自然との関わりにおいて知覚される空間に関心を持ち、遠近法を用いたドローイングや、錯覚を利用した表現により、固定化したものの見方に揺さぶりをかける制作を行っている。そうした彼らの実践は、これまでの空間認識に対し、写真を通して新たなまなざしを提案する「実験」の連続といえる。

アムステルダムのSandberg InstituteおよびGerrit Rietveld Academie of Arts & Designで学び、これまで、Museum de Paviljoens（アルメーレ、オランダ）、Contemporary Istanbul (イスタンブール、トルコ)、gallery Andriesse - Eyck（アムステルダム、オランダ）、Skaftfell Centre for Visual Arts/ Bokasafn（セイズィスフィエルジュル、アイスランド)等で展示を開催した。2005年に国際的なプロダクトデザイン賞である'レッド・ドット・デザイン賞' を受賞したほか、2007年には'13th Van Bommel Van Dam Prize' にもノミネートされた。オランダ、アムステルダムに制作の拠点を置いている。

AIT ARTIST TALK #66 by Artist Elodie Hiryczuk from the Netherlands

AIT is pleased to present a talk by the current artist in residence Elodie Hiryczuk on Monday, March 2nd. Hiryczuk is currently undertaking a residency in Tokyo with support from The Mondriaan Fonds Foundation in the Netherlands.

Elodie Hiryczuk collaborates with artist Sjoerd van Oevelen under the name Hiryczuk/ Van Oevelen. Their photographic works and installations investigate the role of photography in shaping our perception of the world. The visual experience of space in relation to architecture and nature is a recurring topic within their work. By using different modes of representation such as perspectival drawing systems and optical illusions, they create images which perturb mental cliche´s at both conceptual and formal levels. Their practice can be seen as a series of photographic experiments proposing visual alternatives to the conventional optical depiction of space.

Hiryczuk/ Van Oevelen's recent work consists of a series of diptychs and quatychs entitled Shadow-Light-Reflection. In this series they employ photographic sequences to reconstruct a landscape − for instance a cedar forest or a group of wild mimosa trees − from a multiplicity of viewpoints. In this series nature is not shown as a vista from a great distance. There are no horizons, the viewer is engulfed by an intermingling of branches, flowers and leaves. Unlike the famous sequences of Muybridge − showing different temporal stages of movement as slices of time, these photographic sequences, in reverse, create an arrangement of images as the extension of a single event in space. Here the position of the beholder no longer matches that of the camera. The slightly different viewpoint in each photograph creates a 'moving focus' challenging visual perception while conveying a sense of place to the viewer.

During her residency at AIT, Hiryczuk conducts research on the idea of 'the detached gaze' in Japanese art, and in photography in particular. This idea refers to the Japanese term 'bon yari shite' which means 'watching with a detached gaze' or literally 'in an absent-minded way', but also 'looking in an unprejudiced way'. She is especially interested in this 'detached gaze' because it presents an experience of looking very different from the Western gaze, that is to say, devoid of identification and romanticism. Another specific aspect of Japanese culture she is currently exploring in relation to 'the detached gaze' is the notion of 'Ma' or 'in between'. In this ancient Japanese space-time concept it is not time that prevails over space, but space that prevails over time. Elodie will investigate how the notion of 'Ma' has implications for thinking about the experience of space and for photography as a method of representation. Within our present globalized visual culture she also aims to discover how Japanese contemporary artists connect with these very specific notions.

The talk will be in English with consecutive Japanese translation.

Elodie Hiryczuk (Born in 1977, Avignon, France / Lives and works in Amsterdam)

In her photographic works and installations Elodie Hiryczuk investigates the role of photography in shaping our perception of the world. She is particularly interested in our visual experience of space in relation to architecture and nature. Since 2001 she has been collaborating with artist Sjoerd van Oevelen under the name Hiryczuk/ Van Oevelen. Their practice can be seen as a series of experiments proposing visual alternatives to the conventional depiction of space. By using different modes of representation such as perspectival drawing systems and optical illusions, they create photographs which perturb mental cliche´s at both conceptual and formal levels.

Hiryczuk attended the Sandberg Institute and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Arts & Design in Amsterdam. Her work was exhibited at, amongst others, Museum de Paviljoens in Almere, DordtYart in Dordrecht, Contemporary Istanbul (Turkey), gallery Andriesse - Eyck in Amsterdam, and Skaftfell Centre for Visual Arts/ Bokasafn in Seydisfjo¨rdur (Iceland). In 2005 Hiryczuk and Van Oevelen received a Red Dot Award and in 2007 they were nominated for the 13th Van Bommel Van Dam Prize. Elodie Hiryczuk lives and work in Amsterdam.
