Petra Noordkamp
(Lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Petra Noordkamp moves fluidly between photography and film. She explores the influence of experiences, memories, movies and dreams on the perception of architecture and the urban environment. Her work is characterized by a great love of simplicity, emptiness, form and aesthetics, radiating a feeling of loneliness, alienation and melancholy.

She lives and works in Amsterdam where she studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In 2012, her first short film The Mother, the Son and the Architect was shown in an exhibition of her work at Foam in Amsterdam and was selected for various Dutch and international film festivals and exhibitions. She was an artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome in 2013. In 2014 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York commissioned her to make a short film about the Land Art work and memorial Il Grande Cretto di Gibellina by the Italian artist Alberto Burri. This film was among others screened at the Guggenheim in New York, K21 in Dusseldorf, MAXXI in Rome and Centre Pompidou in Paris. Her film When you return I'll be living by the waterside (2017) had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2018 and it won the Move Cine Arch Award for best form in Venice. Her latest installation Fragile-Handle with Care was a commission from MAXXI National Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture in Rome, for the Terre in Movimento project.

During the residency in the Arts Initiative Tokyo, she wants to work out the topics - silence and fear - that concerns her. She is going to do research into meditative spaces but also wants to investigate the subject of fear, her (our) need for control, our vulnerability.

Charlott Markus
(Born in Sweden, works and lives in Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Charlott Markus is a Swedish visual artist living and working in Amsterdam. After graduating from the Photography Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy her works has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Netherlands and abroad. Markus constructs still-lifes and arrangements that predominantly end up as photographic series and as site-specific spatial pieces. Markus is the recipient of the Proven Talent grant from The Mondriaan foundation in 2016 supporting her work for four years. The way Markus works is not only investigating space, color and form but an indirect investigation into relations and structures (often mixed with her own biography). Aside from being a visual artist Markus occasionally organizes events and curates exhibitions with themes close to her own artist practice.

Her solo shows includes "Markus&I" (Weekender Trailer Show, Unseen Photo Fair, Amsterdam, 2014), "Live at: Matter of Gradation" (Intelligentsia Gallery, Beijing, 2015), "Solitaire" (Probe Project Space, Suze May Sho, Amsterdam, 2017). Her works are also exhibited in the group shows including "Collective Thinking, For Freedoms" at Aperture Foundation, NY (2017), "Who are we again?" at Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam (2018).

Through the residency at AIT she will develop new ways of seeing and to make an in-depth acquaintance with history and symbolism within the fields of Japanese textiles, traditions and within the daily (art) life of a contemporary Japan.

Marina Višić
(b. 1987 in Roermond, works and lives in Tilburg, The Netherlands)

In 2016, Marina Višić obtained an MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. At her degree show presentation, she received the Jeanne Szego prize for the imaginative use of colour. Her solo shows include "SPHERE. (AFTER A PAUSE)", (2016, Kers Gallery, Amsterdam) and "Myriade" (2013, Noordbrabants Museum, 's-Hertogenbosch). Her works are also exhibited in the group shows at The Crypt Gallery, London UK (2017), Kers Gallery, Amsterdam NL (2017), Anise Gallery, London UK (2016). Višić trained as an assistant curator at SEA Foundation, a non-profit artist project space and AiR (Artist-in-Residence program) in The Netherlands. She currently works independently as a curator and project manager, organising exhibitions, symposia and publications.
In her work, Višić investigates how a variety of textures and movements can be placed into the landscape of the moving image. The video pieces rethink the bodily experience and give the sensation of being lost and immersed. Staging is important as well as the scale of the images and their relation to the body. The work is presented as an object in a constant motion, rather than a time based video carrying a narrative. The initial objects and materials in the work undergo is a transformation. The real into the virtual and back to the real - portal - something mundane propelled into the stardom, becoming part of a fantastical realm, turning the virtual into the palpable.
The core of her residency at AIT is formed by architectural and geographical references from Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows" and the films of Akira Kurosawa. These are the driving forces for her research of both modern and traditional elements of Japanese aesthetics concerning light, shadow, movement, materials and surfaces.

Rory Pilgrim
(Born in 1988, Bristol, UK)

The work of British artist Rory Pilgrim is based on emancipatory concerns, in which personal and political questions are brought together to explore questions of time and connections between activism, spirituality, music and community. Strongly influenced by the origins of activist, feminist and socially engaged art, Pilgrim works in a wide range of media including live performance, film, text, workshops and musical composition. Pilgrim in particular composes music as a way to bring people together and explore how we use it to challenge, celebrate and voice ourselves.

Pilgrim obtained a BA from Chelsea College of Art, London and was a participant of the De Ateliers residency programme between 2008-2010 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Recents solo shows include Flat Time House, London, UK (2016), Site Gallery, Sheffield UK (2016), Andriesse-Eyck Gallery, Amsterdam NL (2015) and sic! Raum für Kunst, Luzern CH (2014). Groups shows, performances and screenings include South London Gallery, UK (2016), Guangzhou Triennial, CN (2015), Land Art Live, Almere NL (2015), MING Studios, Boise USA (2015), Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht NL (2014), Rowing Projects, London UK (2013), Kunst Werke, Berlin DE (2013) and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2012) .

For Pilgrim's time with AIT he will build upon a new body of work entitled 'ERASURE' that focuses on the body as a site of action in at a time of impending ecological collapse and the fusion between human, non human species and machine in an era of hypermodernity. Pilgrim hopes to make research, conversation and dialogue that explores Japanese artistic movements relating to Feminist, Activist and Socially engaged practice to develop a series of choreographic methodologies and music questioning how environmentalism provides a basis for social and political emancipation.

Rosa Doornenbal
(Born in 1988, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

The artistic practice of Rosa Doornenbal shows an interest in formal, cultural and social aspects that influence the appreciation of objects in everyday life. The parallel of this in the art world - the viewer's experience of sculpture - is central in her work. She works in a variety of media creating detailed circumstances that reveal the interrelationship between viewer, object, equipment, tool and sculpture. With a critical and playful attitude she often treats the exhibition space, with its already formulated codes of behavior, as part of her work. In her most recent works the process of creation becomes a subject as she explores issues of craftsmanship and what artisthood could mean today.

Rosa Doornenbal obtained her BA of Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2013. She also has a background in Cultural Studies of which she obtained her BA at the University of Amsterdam in 2012. Recent shows she participated in are 'Wilful Blindness' at W139 in Amsterdam and 'Aspen Kemmern' at Kim? Contemporary Art Centre (Riga, Latvia). She also co-organized the group show 'And then it just happened' at Inter Arts Centre in Malmö (Malmö, Sweden) in 2014.

Blog "wabi-bijin"
The blog 'wabi-bijin', designed by Mislav Žugaj, represents the two sided interest that Rosa Doornenbal will elaborate on during her residency period. One part of the blog displays her research on the Japanese Tea Ceremony and the way this is shaped by Buddhist notions of esthetics, philosphy and spirituality. Another part of the blog can be seen as a reaction on contemporary conceptions of beauty that are represented in popculture and anime esthetics. The content as well as the design will be changing and shifting constantly to explore these notions from a digital perspective.

Elodie Hiryczuk (Born in 1977, Avignon, France)

In her photographic works and installations Elodie Hiryczuk investigates the role of photography in shaping our perception of the world. She is particularly interested in our visual experience of space in relation to architecture and nature. Since 2001 she has been collaborating with artist Sjoerd van Oevelen under the name Hiryczuk/ Van Oevelen. Their practice can be seen as a series of experiments proposing visual alternatives to the conventional depiction of space. By using different modes of representation such as perspectival drawing systems and optical illusions, they create photographs which perturb mental clichés at both conceptual and formal levels.

Hiryczuk attended the Sandberg Institute and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Arts & Design in Amsterdam. Her work was exhibited at, amongst others, Museum de Paviljoens in Almere, DordtYart in Dordrecht, Contemporary Istanbul (Turkey), gallery Andriesse - Eyck in Amsterdam, and Skaftfell Centre for Visual Arts/ Bokasafn in Seydisfjördur (Iceland). In 2005 Hiryczuk and Van Oevelen received a Red Dot Award and in 2007 they were nominated for the 13th Van Bommel Van Dam Prize. Elodie Hiryczuk lives and work in Amsterdam.

Vincent Vulsma (Born in 1982, Zaandam, Netherlands)

The work of Vincent Vulsma explores the tensions between autonomous art and the sociopolitical relations underlying its production. Important starting points for his investigations are the history and economy of cultural appropriation. An underlying theme here is the relation between work and artwork. By playing various production technologies off against one another Vulsma interrogates the hierarchic division of immaterial and material labour in an era that is dominated by digital forms of production.

Vulsma studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2002-2006) and was a participant at De Ateliers in Amsterdam (2006-2008). His recent solo exhibitions include A Sign of Autumn at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (2011) and ARS NOVA E5305-B at Galerie Cinzia Friedlaender (Berlin, 2009). Vulsma took part in group exhibitions at Museum Abteiberg (Mönchengladbach, 2013), Musée d'Art Moderne (Paris, 2013), De Vleeshal (Middelburg, 2013), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, 2012), Kunstverein Düsseldorf (2012) and the 6th Berlin Biennale (2010).

Melvin Moti (Born in 1977 in Rotterdam)

Born 1977, Rotterdam. Lives and works in Rotterdam and Berlin.
Moti examines neurological, scientific and historic processes in relation to visual culture.
